Building Integration of Solar Energy Systems: A Roadmap

This manual aims to simplify the interdisciplinary design process and present a roadmap, which will be used as a design tool for the sustainable building integration of active solar systems (Building Integrated Solar Thermal Systems - BISTS, Building Integrated Photovoltaic Systems - BIPVs). The presented process begins with a literature review as to how various engineers / researchers have integrated active solar systems into buildings which were used as case studies.

The proposed methodology is the evolution of the research work of the author and his collaborators, and aims to develop an innovative manual, which analyzes the design path to be followed from the initial stages of the architectural design process, when solar energy will be integrated into the building systems. Specifically, based on the above research, a design strategy emerged, which is based on five stages – separately analyzed, and led to the creation of a design tool. Its development constitutes a methodology, which engineers and researchers can follow for the building integration of such systems.
